Cord leader Raila Odinga should consider abandoning Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate in 2017 or he will be defeated as was the case in the 2013 general election, Deputy President William Ruto said yesterday.
Ruto said Raila should change strategy and his line up.
He was speaking at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Siaya county, during the launch of the Anglican Church synod.
The DP said Raila should stop blaming him for losing his presidential bid in 2013, but instead prepare for a bruising battle in 2017.
Ruto said Raila should not have a problem with him since they did not contest against each other.
“At times Raila gets bitter with me when he reflects on the election predicaments, yet I personally was contesting against Kalonzo. I want to tell him I have no problem with him and what he witnessed in the last polls was a result of uncontrolled circumstances,” he said.
“He competed with President Uhuru Kenyatta and he will do the same in 2017.”
Ruto urged Raila to revive his campaign structures in readiness for the last duel with Uhuru.
“Let Raila plan well this time round for it will be a tougher battle that does not require people like Kalonzo. Let him unleash his campaign weapons and face Uhuru head-on in the battle field,” the DP said.
He said in 2017, the Jubilee government will get back to power as they have confidence and trust in most Kenyans.
“President Uhuru and Agwambo (Raila) will again fight for the top seat in 2017, but in 2022, I will come back to Bondo to seek your support for the top seat,” Ruto said.
He said he voted for Raila in 2007 and expects to get his blessings in 2017.
Ruto said he will defeat Raila by far if he picks Kalonzo as his running mate in 2017.
He said the Jubilee government is developing regions perceived to be brooding controversial politics to ensure “they feel power” as they pay taxes although they do not support the government.
Ruto warned some Cord leaders against creating a rift between him and Raila with non-existent allegations.
“Some Cord leaders like Siaya Senator James Orengo and Johnstone Muthama of Machakos are engaging me in unnecessary political witch-hunt to create a wedge between me and Raila,” he said.
Ruto accused Nyanza leaders of failing to visit his office and that of Uhuru for “goodies” to develop the region.
“I have been yearning to come to Siaya county for development matters but nobody, including local MPs and the governor has visited our offices. They fear criticism as far as the region’s politics is concerned but I must thank Bishop Joannes Angela for his invitation,” the DP said.
Ruto who was with MPs Ken Obura (Kisumu Central), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Mathews Rodi (Kuria West) and Mary Emmasse (Teso) and Uhuru’s former political adviser Raphael Tuju.
Ruto urged Luo Nyanza leaders to work with the Jubilee administration to develop the region’s economy.
