An officer attached to the elite General Service Unit’s Recce Company was on Wednesday evening arrested in Kilimani in Nairobi County after he was found extorting money from motorists.
Constable Moses Njue Ngare based in Ruiru was arrested at the Ralph Bunche-Valley Road junction by officers from the Kilimani CID office.
Police had received reports that the officer was arresting motorists, who break traffic rules at the junction and release them after receiving bribes.
Constable Ngare, who was dressed in a suit, was found with his work identity card and a police radio. Police records show that the radio was issued by the GSU headquarters.
The officer claimed that he was on a presidential function.
At least 15 officers have been arrested since January over criminal offences.
On Monday, another police officer was arrested at Isinya Police Station in connection with ivory trafficking.
His colleagues were arrested at the Bounty Hotel parking lot in possession of 600gms of white rhino horn valued at Sh1.2million but the officer, Constable Philip Kipketer Tanui, escaped.
The officer, attached to the Syokimau Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), was arraigned in court on Tuesday. He was charged in court with “being in possession of wildlife trophy in contravention of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.
