Former Embakasi MP Mellitus Mugabe Were’s father, Anthony Ombayo Were, now says the incident that led to the shooting to death of his son seven years ago was politically motivated. Mr Ombayo, who spoke to The Standard after three men were sentenced to death for killing his son, said normal robbery was not the motive for the shooting. Although he expressed satisfaction with the way investigations were conducted and the trial process, Ombayo feared that those behind his son’s death could still be free. “After my son won the election, he told me one of his opponents in the polls had warned him that he would not live long to enjoy the victory. I just told him to be careful,” he said, adding that he did not want to reveal the opponent’s name because he feared for his own security. Ombayo urged the Government to pursue the masterminds of such killings, who he said were roaming freely. Deserving penalty “Although the perpetrators of my son’s murder were given a deserving penalty, there is still much to be done. The real assassins are out there using desperate youths to accomplish their missions. Some of these incidents are politically motivated while others are business deals gone sour. Love rivals also do this,” he said. Ombayo expressed concern over the unexplained killings of prominent personalities, with the most recent being Kabete MP George Muchai, who was murdered in cold blood just over a week ago
